Lesson 1: Handling Hesitancy

Background on why some people might be skeptical about the important Covid-19 vaccination.

Vaccination decisions are affected by a person’s attitudes, their beliefs, potential biases, different motivations, their psychological makeup and some other factors. Some people are more skeptical than others and some people are more open to new things. It is Important for you to know that when a person is not sick, they usually do not have an immediate desire to get vaccinated. You will need to increase that desire with powerful arguments. There is also a level of inconvenience that the vaccination will cause, e.g., joining of long queues, long and painful registration processes and bureaucratic obstacles that make people avoid the vaccination process. Some people also lack adequate information, attention, or capacity to understand issues around COVID-19 vaccination. Those who have limited experience with the disease may find it hard to identify with the threats.

Too much information on COVID-19 or other health threats could induce an overload in the mind and cause mental fatigue that will result in people ignoring anything to do with the topic. When you deal with vaccine hesitant people it is crucial to understand their reasons:

  1. Vaccination decisions are affected by the person’s attitude
  2. We need to awaken the desire to get vaccinated with powerful arguments
  3. Let’s be supportive with bureaucratic obstacles
  4. We should avoid information overload and concentrate on the most important messages
